My two cents on being yourself
There’s an interesting trend in inspirational posts. Inspirational posts tend to focus on removing societal influences on the individual. Don’t worry, you’re beautiful regardless of what they say. You’re never worthless. It’s okay to be gay/queer/*insert any trait that has a negative perception*.
Here’s what’s so wrong all about those quotes. It seeks to remove yourself from the gaze of society and the standards it imposes on you. But since when has society been so detached from the individual or vice versa.
To deny that society is the ultimate standard of values, is to deny its contribution in creating you and everything you stand for. In this world, the only values that have any meaning are those of your society. Anything else is a piece of bullshit. It is hypocritical to assume the values of society that you enjoy but to disregard and adopt another standard for when societal values disagree with you.
There’s nothing wrong with refusing to conform to societal values, it’s another to say that you should screw society away.
